Penny Summers Tournament

Sunday 29th August 2010 saw the 9th running of our annual Club competition, The Penny Summers Handicap Trophy.  This year was tinged with a little sadness because Penny passed away just a few months ago.  It had been originally named in her honour and will continue to provide us with a special remembrance of a unique lady sadly missed.

Entry this year was limited to 18 members and included 2 past champions.  Round 1 provided some shock results with 4 of the top seeded players being eliminated.  There were some very close results that showed that allocated handicaps were pretty accurate.  As always, the handicap groupings were based on league averages during the preceding season.  Whilst that is usually quite reliable with adult players it fails to take into account the rapid improvement of juniors during a comparitively short period.

That proved to be the case with 2 of our "stars of the future".  Evie Foster (who was celebrating her 13th birthday) fought her way to the final to come up against the 2008 champion Stuart Fritter who had to give her 24 points a leg meaning that she had to score at least 7 and met her target by getting 8 and 10.  Earlier, younger brother Ben Foster claimed the honours of the Consolation award.

Our recently appointed Honorary President, Jeff Cooper, presented the awards.
